Mirah: When Courage Sees Beyond Sight

At just 19 years old, Mirah Andriamarosata already carries the spirit of a true leader. Blind since birth, she doesn’t just learn, she teaches. As a volunteer with the SAHY project, she has trained dozens of students, both with and without disabilities, on online safety, proving that digital engagement and accessibility are not a matter of age or physical ability.

Currently completing her final year in the literary track at her high school in Ambohitrimanjaka, Mirah is preparing to sit for the national baccalaureate exam in 2025. She dreams of founding an NGO to support blind youth, or launching a service-oriented business. In the meantime, she is already shaping her path through classrooms and training centers.

After attending International Youth Day at Mahamasina, she came across the Youth First booth and discovered the SAHY project, funded by UNICEF. The project raises awareness about safe and positive use of the internet. Moved by the topic, she immediately joined the team as a volunteer trainer.

Seven sessions. Five locations. From public schools to specialized centers, Mirah met with young people to educate them on both the risks and opportunities of digital spaces. She explained the five types of online behaviors (AESEL) with clarity and empathy.

“I didn’t have any issues with students without disabilities. But for students with visual impairments, I had to adapt.”

Without complaint, Mirah found a solution: she took these students aside, explained each concept verbally, and asked them to explain it back in their own words. An inclusive and deeply respectful approach.

In a world that remains far from inclusive, Mirah leads with quiet strength.

“In my everyday life, some people try to make me feel different. But during this project, I never felt that way.”

Thanks to her poise and seriousness, she quickly earned the students’ respect.

“When I notice they’re losing focus, I reassert myself. They understand I’m here to teach them values.”

As a result, each session led by Mirah was a success and some students even asked for her to return!
